That's right. Today, I turned 30 years old. This is not a milestone I've feared, nor is it one I've been anxious to achieve. It's just another birthday. I know that I have no control over how old I am. I don't see age as being a bad or scary thing. I'm simply a year older and now must get used to calling myself a "thirty-something."
I've had a great, low-key day today. Jason got up with Rylan and let me stay in bed a bit longer this morning. Unfortunately, at this point in time, I can't really continue to sleep, and I get a bit uncomfortable lying down after a night's (fitful) sleep. But, at least I got to take my sweet time getting out of bed.
We got ready and headed out to breakfast at Mon Amie, a little French breakfast place on the eastside of town. We'd never been there before. I wasn't overly impressed, but I would give it another chance.
We stopped by our polling location on the way home so that we could cast our ballots for the South Carolina Republican Presidential Primary.
We came home and played with Rylan for a bit, then all three of us (four if you include the cat) settled in for an afternoon nap. It was pouring down rain...perfect sleeping weather.
After naps and a little relaxing time, we headed out to meet my mom for dinner at Rafferty's in Greenville. That was my pick, because I thought a salad and Hot Fingers sounded fantastic. (Side note: great choice on my part.)
We had an awesome, very personable server. There was a sweet older couple sitting at the table beside us, and they oohed and aahed over Rylan a bunch.
The low point of my birthday came as the Duke/FSU basketball game was drawing to a close on the TV behind me. Apparently the table behind us was a table full of Duke fans. It wasn't just one; it was a table full. I made a light-hearted, non-confrontational comment to them, asking if they were all Duke fans. Big mistake. Not only were they Duke fans, but they were nasty, RUDE Duke fans.
They made a lot of snide, uncalled for comments my way. I didn't ask for any of it. I never said a mean or confrontational word to them. They were just plain classless, and they nearly brought me to tears.
Because of their actions, I've never been happier to see Duke lose. I only wish they'd still been sitting there during the final seconds of the game. Oh well. Happy Birthday to Me! :)
To top things off, we came home, put Rylan to bed and began watching the election results. Much to my happiness, Newt Gingrich won South Carolina. He's the candidate I've been cheering for, so that was another little birthday present for me.
Overall, it's been a great day. I didn't have a flashy 30th birthday party. I didn't go on some big vacation. I spent the day at home with my sweet family, doing exactly what I wanted. It doesn't get any better than that.
